MOU between MOHFW and Walk for Life

Walk for life is a program of the Glencoe Foundation to correct clubfoot deformity in children under 3 years of age. Without invasive surgery the clubfoot is corrected by the ponseti method of manipulation and casting. In Bangladesh it is estimated that between 4000 and 5000 children are born with clubfoot deformity every year. The walk for Life program now has over 8000 (12000feet) children to have started treatment. Left untreated, the condition leads to lifelong deformity. The exact causes are unknown, but research indicates genetic factors may play a role. The existence of this condition has been documented for thousands of years and is one of the most common birth defects. It occurs in both feet about 50% of the time. It occurs more often in boys than girls. Clubfoot occurs in approximately 1 out of 900 births.
The walk for Life program, under an MOU, is included in the operational Plan 2011-2016 with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. There are now over 40 clinics in government hospitals. Few children have to travel more than 60 kms for treatment. Family planning and Walk for Life has to plan to increase awareness all over Bangladesh. Over the next few month’s awareness material will be distributed to all Family Planning centers.
